KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 12): Teleport, AirAsia Group Bhd’s logistics technology company, partnered with Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics arm, to deliver cross-border orders placed on the latter’s e-commerce platform, Tmall Taobao.

The partnership will initially start from Shenzhen and Canton in China to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the main hub in eastern Malaysia, AirAsia said in a statement on its website.

The cargo-only flight consisting of Tmall orders departed from Shenzhen, China to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah yesterday on 11.11 or Double 11, the biggest sales event of the year.

“Having previously worked with Teleport in close collaboration with Cainiao for freight-only chartered flights, it seems appropriate to continue this as a long-term partnership to deliver packages in China to East Malaysia. By leveraging Teleport’s strong technology integration (API) between the two platforms and AirAsia’s regional network, we can enable e-commerce delivery in Southeast Asia from multiple cities in China, ”said Pete Chareonwongsak, CEO of Teleport.

Kenny Wu, Director of Tmall Export Line Haul Logistics in Cainiao, said: “The establishment of a Malaysia-China direct e-commerce logistics service is a continuing affirmation of our investment in the region. With the rise of e-commerce and cross-border business activities, delivery efficiency will be increasingly crucial for business success and growth of economies.

“This partnership with Teleport will help streamline customs clearance and improve cargo stability as we continue to work toward our goal of delivering globally within 72 hours.”

At 4.44 pm, AirAsia’s share price rose 2 sen or 3.1% to 66.5 sen, giving it a market capitalization of RM2.26 billion.
