PUTRAJAYA: Two people, including a senior official from a telecommunications company (telco), were referred to assist in an investigation related to fraud using the short message service (SMS).
Judge Siti Roslizawati Mohd Zanin issued the order of preventive detention, for five days from today, against the two men, following a request from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
This brings to six the number of people now in pre-trial detention in connection with the case.
According to a MACC source, the 39-year-old senior officer and a 47-year-old telecommunications officer were arrested at MACC headquarters yesterday after giving their statements.
The two men are believed to have given and accepted bribes in order to obtain personal information about telecommunications customers using prepaid plans.
The mobile numbers are then used by unions that charge subscription fees for content via SMS without the customer’s knowledge and consent, he said.
Yesterday, a 49-year-old telecommunications officer received a five-day remand order, allegedly for receiving RM300,000 in stages through his personal account from a company in exchange for disclosing the list of customers using mobile services prepayments.
A day earlier, two Datuks were among the company’s three directors, detained for five days for allegedly giving bribes worth millions of ringgit to telecommunications officials to disclose customer details.
