MIRI: A monster-sized crocodile that was captured alive near a school in the city of Limbang in northern Sarawak was put to sleep.
The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said it had to euthanize the reptile as it had serious gunshot wounds to the head.
SFC CEO Zolkipli Mohamad Aton said on Thursday (November 12) that the injuries were too severe to be treated.
“We had to quit.
“A member of the public had shot him in the head before the Limbang Fire and Rescue Department could reach the crocodile.
“At SFC we are investigating who shot the crocodile,” he said.
Zolkipli said the body had been transported by forklift to a nature sanctuary located in Kubong village on the outskirts of the city for burial.
SFC had to hire a forklift to transport the huge crocodile.
The huge reptile weighing about 500 kg and measuring about 5 m in length was captured on Tuesday (November 10) at midnight.
The creature, which had gotten into a drain near SK St Edmund in Limbang, was seen by members of the public who alerted the Fire and Rescue Department.
The Limbang fire and rescue station team captured him alive before handing him over to SFC.
However, the team discovered that someone had shot the crocodile, who survived the shooting but was injured.
Team members managed to immobilize the animal and tie it securely before placing it in a truck while they waited for SFC to take care of the reptile.
It is not known where the huge crocodile came from. The city is located on the banks of the Limbang River.
