PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH) called on Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa to ensure that the policy of allowing merchants to set up a shop “anywhere” does not add to the problems of traffic and cleaning of the city.
In a joint statement, MPs welcomed Annuar’s enthusiasm for being business friendly and providing opportunities for those facing tough times due to Covid-19.
“However, the minister must ensure that this new policy is not abused and does not further contribute to the perennial problems of cleanliness and congestion in the city.
“Safety must also be a primary consideration in the implementation of this policy,” they said.
Annuar had previously announced that residents of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan can conduct their business anywhere within the three federal territories for the next five months.
Traders must apply for a temporary static street vendor license which will be automatically approved and inform the local authorities of their business plan.
He said this was for authorities to monitor them, including to make sure they were not obstructing traffic.
PH MPs also called for the simplification of license applications to be expanded to include other businesses, particularly small and medium-sized businesses.
They also said that they were still seeking a meeting with Annuar about DBKL’s budget planning for 2021.
