PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is willing to accept a 10% cut in his pension as long as it is used to help those who have lost their source of income.

“I admit that my life is not affected at all by the lockdown and the standard operating procedure that I have to practice,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (November 10).

He said that every time he became prime minister, his first motion was to cut the salaries of ministers, vice ministers and senior government officials by 10%.

“There were no major financial problems at the time,” he said.

He said wages have increased several times compared to before and, although many had lost their source of income, those in the government did not have to endure wage cuts.

Dr. Mahathir also stated that there were also no pay cuts in the private sector.

“To reduce the gap between the lucky and the unlucky, the deduction of 10% of what is safe to give to the affected is justified,” he said.

On Monday (November 9), Dr. Mahathir proposed that those who earn high salaries in government or the private sector should give up 10% of their salaries to help the poor during the Covid-19 pandemic.
