IPOH: The bodies of two people buried in a landslide have been found at a resort in a mountainous area in Tambun near here earlier today.
Perak Acting Police Chief Datuk Goh Boon Keng said a man’s body was found for the first time at 9.55 a.m., before another body, of a woman, was discovered in a hot tub at one of the units of the complex.
“The relationship of the two victims who are 30 years old has not yet been determined.
“The initial investigation found that the landslide occurred on the side of one of the hills,” he told reporters at the scene.
Goh said work to remove the two victims had to be postponed several times due to earth and water movements, but work was resumed at 7 am using a backhoe on the advice of the Perak Department of Minerals and Geosciences.
He said resort staff discovered the landslide around 1 a.m. and promptly instructed all their clients in the four occupied units to save themselves, but the two victims were trapped.
The two bodies were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for autopsy.
Meanwhile, the director of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, Azmi Osman, said that a team of 47 members participated in the search and rescue operation to locate the two victims, including the K9 unit from the Klang Valley.
“The 100m landslide and the movements of the ground and water were probably triggered by the heavy rains in recent days,” he said.
The deputy director of the Perak Department of Minerals and Geosciences, Mat Niza Abdul Rahman, on the other hand, said that an initial inspection found that the complex area was surrounded by limestone hills on the remaining ground covered with trees, but the ground was weakened when exposed to rainwater.
“As the ground weakens, it caused the landslide that destroyed part of the tourist area,” he said.
Mat Niza said the department would hold talks with authorities to take additional measures, including conducting a study on the level of security in the area, and that they did not rule out the possibility of similar incidents at the site. – Called
