KUCHING (November 8): Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) will head the opposition bench in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) which will meet from tomorrow, as the party now has numerical superiority over the Democratic Action Party ( DAP), said DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.

He said that the DAP initially held six state seats, the same as the PSB, until Padungan Assemblyman Wong King Wei resigned from the DAP on July 26.

“Now PSB has six (state seats) and DAP has five. With this numerical superiority, changes in the seating arrangements in the DUN Chambers are inevitable.

“PSB’s numerical superiority gives it an advantage over DAP, and the opposition leadership in Dewan inevitably changes,” Asfia said at a press conference after Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) DUN’s pre-council meeting here this morning. .

The opposition bench was previously led by Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, who is Chairman of Sarawak DAP. But after King Wei resigned from the party, DAP is one seat less than PSB.

On July 26, King Wei announced his resignation from the DAP because he was disappointed with the party’s lack of achievements and was unable to fulfill many of his electoral promises while in the federal government for 22 months.

Additionally, Asfia added, PSB Chairman and Bawang Assan Assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh had served five terms as a DUN Honorable Member and is currently in his sixth term, while Chong had served two terms and is currently serving in his third term.

“This gives Soon Koh seniority to occupy the position of leader of the opposition,” he said.

He explained that the seating arrangements in the DUN were determined by the President in accordance with Standing Order 2.

“Standing Order 2 says: The first day of the Dewan meeting after a general election or an extension and thereafter, the members will be seated according to the arrangements determined by the Speaker whose decision on the matter will be final,” Asfia said. .

When asked what the seating arrangements will be like for the opposition in the DUN, he said they will sit in blocks.

Asfia said PSB elected representatives will be seated up front, followed by DAP, then King Wei followed by Saratok Assemblyman Ali Biju, who is from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

The five-day DUN session will meet tomorrow and end on Friday.
