AMPANG JAYA: Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, former CEO of the Malaysian Airline System Bhd group, was among the two people who survived a helicopter crash in Taman Melawati here this morning.
Jauhari, 66, was aboard a helicopter that made an emergency landing after a mid-air collision involving two helicopters.
The other person accompanying him aboard the helicopter, Tan Chai Eian, 51, also survived the landing near the Taman Melawati Tamil school field.
The two men in the other helicopter died when it crashed.
Ampang Jaya Police Chief Mohamad Farouk Eshak confirmed that only one of the helicopters crashed in the incident.
Confirming that an airborne collision had occurred, Farouk said the dead had been identified as Mohamad Sabri Baharom, 56, and Mohd Irfan Fikri Mohamed Rawi, 44.
He said investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the incident.
“The two helicopters were from the same company and were believed to be flying between Subang and Genting Sempah.
“Police investigations focus on the cause of death. The investigation into the cause of the accident will be carried out by the Department of Civil Aviation ”, he said.
Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong also confirmed that an airborne collision had occurred during a flight training exercise involving four crew members.
In a statement, it said that the helicopter accident involved two G2CA helicopters (9M-HCA and 9M-HCB).
He said that while one of the helicopters crashed, the other made a successful emergency landing.
The Kuala Lumpur Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Center (KL ARCC) led the rescue coordination efforts.
Wee said the ministry’s Air Accident Investigation Office (BSKU) launched a technical investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident. Initial results will be published within 30 days.
