Bruno Fernandes has explained why he gave Edinson Cavani his first goal for Manchester United.

The Red Devils were victorious 3-1 over Everton to ease the pressure after a stressful week.

Two defeats in a row had put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under immense pressure following losses to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir.

But a morale-boosting victory over the Toffees before the international break was exactly what the Norwegians needed.

And you can thank Fernandes a lot after two goals and one assist, after United lost a goal.

His main man’s performance could have saved his job and also provided Cavani with his first goal for his new club.

The Uruguayan international signed from Paris St-Germain in a free signing with a huge pedigree.

But after not playing since March, the 33-year-old is still getting used to life in the Premier League and has had to settle for a seat on the bench.

A few cameos passed, but there is a feeling that his goal against Everton could see him kick now, something Fernandes was hoping for.

The Portugal international went on target and could have scored his hat-trick, but instead passed the ball to Cavani to score.

Fernandes told BBC Sport: “The point is to win the game.

Cavani beat Jordan Pickford to make it 3-1

“[I set up Edinson Cavani because] It’s important for a striker to score because of his confidence, it will be important for us and the first goal will give him confidence.

“I don’t need to think about a hat-trick, I need to think about the future.

“Every game is important, we are not good in the league so these three points are important.
