PETALING JAYA: A safe haven yesterday became a death trap for 54 dogs in Seremban.

The canines were among 1,800 stray dogs that had been cared for at Furrykids Safehaven, an animal shelter in the Mambau district of Seremban.

Surevin Nair, who is president of the nonprofit that owns the shelter, said his staff called him at 3 a.m. yesterday to tell him that the shelter had flooded after hours of heavy rain.

The 1.7-acre site was under up to three meters of water.

Most of the dogs managed to swim to the roof of the shelter to escape the flooding, but all 54, including puppies that were still nursing, couldn’t find a way out of the kennels in which they slept.

This is the first incident of its kind for Furrykids Safehaven since it was established in 2017.

Nair said the shelter could use more help.

“Besides the cash, we also need items like medical kits and kibbles, and more volunteers to help,” he added.

Offers of help or inquiries can be channeled to Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Furrykids Safehaven via his email [email protected].
