PETALING JAYA: Between January 2018 and last month, 1,377,862 prepaid lines were registered without valid information, according to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia.
Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said he has canceled 920,217 of those lines and updated the other 457,645 with valid information to prevent the numbers from being used for fraud.
“From the industrial regulation aspect, MCMC conducts the data verification audit process with the National Registry Department (JPN) to verify the integrity of our prepaid user line database, ensuring that all active lines are validated accordingly, “he said in response. to Kimanis MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin on the ministry’s initiative to protect people from scams.
Saifuddin said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have established a Cyber Crimes Committee to enable both sides to work together strategically to combat cyber crime.
Additionally, CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) is promoting online security through awareness programs and sharing its technical expertise with enforcement authorities such as PDRM and the Ministry of Homeland Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
Saifuddin also explained to Mohamad Alamin that the investigation of online and offline scams is under the jurisdiction of PDRM, KPDNHEP, the Securities Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia and other related agencies, depending on the type of fraud.
In a previous statement, MCMC announced that it had issued 15 compounds totaling RM700,000 on October 1 to telcos that registered prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information last year.
PDRM also launched a Semak Mule mobile app for the public to check if any of their phone numbers or bank accounts have been used to commit fraud.
