KUALA LUMPUR: The government has detected more than 1.37 million prepaid lines with dubious registration data, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah told Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

He said that the Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) conducts a data verification audit with the National Registry Department.

This is to help verify the accuracy and validity of subscriber records. A total of 920,217 lines were canceled and 457,645 were updated with valid information, Saifuddin said.

“The measure is to prevent misuse by irresponsible parties of illegal activities,” he said in response to an oral question from Datuk Mohamad Alamin (BN-Kimanis).

Mohamad had asked about the ministry’s efforts to prevent the public from becoming a victim of cyber fraud through the use of apps and phone calls.

“The PDRM-MCMC Cyber Crimes Committee has been empowered to combat such crimes, including fraud or scams.

“Cooperation and collaboration between the two parties, especially the exchange of information and experience, are vital to carry out law enforcement to address abuse on social media more effectively.”

He said the Information Department is using official social media channels to ensure that people have access to accurate and authentic information about cyber fraud.

He welcomed the use of talk shows, community service messages, and news reports to raise awareness.

To combat activities such as Macau scams and increase the effectiveness of the country’s cybersecurity, the government has launched the Malaysia Cybersecurity Strategy 2020-2024 with an allocation of RM 1.8 billion, Saifuddin added.
