As noted in our report last month, it seems quite likely that the PlayStation 5 will not launch in Malaysia any time soon. In fact, Singapore is the only country in Southeast Asia to have received the official launch date and price for the new console, plus two rounds of pre-orders.

Naturally, many players in the region are upset by this, which they consider a bias towards Singapore, which is SIE’s regional headquarters in Southeast Asia. However, today’s announcement of the PlayStation 5 Asia Celebration event seemed to further increase the fury.
Scheduled to take place online on November 11, the PlayStation 5 Asia Celebration includes several missions that offer players from across the region the opportunity to win prizes, the grand prize being a PS5. However, many players immediately noted that Singapore players are the only ones in Southeast Asia who can win the PS5, as well as most of the other prizes on the list:
As shown above, other Southeast Asian players are only eligible to win a theme for their PS4 that doesn’t look good for an event called as “Celebration of Asia”. Not surprisingly, many of them expressed their frustration via the PlayStation Asia Facebook page.
Some have even suggested that PlayStation Asia change its name to PlayStation Singapore instead:
Despite being the home of the only division of PlayStation Worldwide Studios in Southeast Asia and the host of the first PlayStation experience outside of the United States, it’s pretty clear that there is no preferential treatment for Malaysia when it comes to PS5.
However, to tell the truth, there are plenty of possible reasons for SIE not announcing the details of the PS5 launch in markets outside of Singapore. They could range from stock limitations to logistical difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, formalities and tax complexities in the respective markets, but of course these are not something to be discussed in public.
Also, we already know that the PS5 will eventually launch in our market given its appearance on the PlayStation website in Malaysia. However, it’s pretty obvious that local gamers could settle down until SIE finally clears the status of the PS5 launch in Malaysia.
Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.
