KUALA LUMPUR: A civil service union member has called for an immediate and detailed investigation into the death of a police officer earlier this morning after he was hit by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver.
Adnan Mat, president of Cuepacs, said that prosecution should start immediately if a crime has been committed, and “a strong and fair punishment should be a lesson for everyone.”
Separately, Interior Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said talks would be held with the transport ministry about strengthening the Road Transport Law to allow more severe penalties for drunk drivers through fines or imprisonment.
“This is to ensure that drivers are more careful and do not drive vehicles when they are drunk,” he said after a work visit to Perlis.
Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail, 31, from Kajang Police Headquarters, died of serious bodily injury and head injury after being struck by a four-wheeled vehicle at 2.11am today near the plaza toll booth of Kajang South.
The corporal was on duty at a barricade near the toll plaza at the time. He died on the spot.
Adnan also discussed complaints about police officers facing bureaucratic obstacles when making claims for their RM200 Covid-19 grant.
“There are those who have been on duty for almost 30 consecutive days, who were asked to fill out various forms, submit bank statements and obtain approval from the department head before receiving the assignment when all the required information is already available,” he said. . .
Adnan and Hamzah conveyed their condolences to the Safwan family.
Hamzah said enforcement of the restrictions under the motion control order would be relaxed. “Blockages in the red zones will continue to be mounted while the green zones will see some reduction,” he said.
