Daughter left the ventilator with coronavirus after moving to help sick parents

The daughter of a woman with coronavirus ended up on a ventilator after knowingly entering her parents’ infected home to provide care.

Sisters Annette Gardner and Sue Roberts moved to Wythall, Worcestershire, home to their elderly and sick parents, Vic and Margaret Gardner.

Unfortunately, they were unable to help Vic recover and he died of Covid-19, the Birmingham Mail reports.

With her care and attention, Margaret survived.

However, the sisters’ intervention had a cost, since both women who ended up in the hospital contracted coronavirus.

The disease came close to claiming the life of 58-year-old Annette.

Her recovery has been well documented thanks to a video posted by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

In the images, staff at Alexandra Redditch Hospital can be seen applauding loudly when they finally leave intensive care on April 18.

Annette, who works at Heart of Worcestershire College in Redditch, and her sister made the decision to enter the gap just a few days before they called an ambulance, as it became clear that her mother and father were ill.

“They knew what they were getting into,” says Annette’s daughter Emma Kirby.

“But that’s what you do for your family.

“They entered to save their lives and managed to save one of them. They are heroes in our eyes. “

Vic, 89, died on March 26, just six days after being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston.

The caring hospital staff briefly reunited Vic and Margaret at the hospital for their wedding anniversary on March 22.

It was the last time the couple met.

Margaret, 83, has been left with lung scars that she is unlikely to heal and now lives in a hospice.

Before the illness, he had been waiting to move into a protected housing bungalow with Vic.

Meanwhile, Annette, the grandmother of three children, spent 17 days struggling to survive in intensive care after she and Sue were admitted to Alexandra Hospital on March 26.

Her condition was so severe that she said goodbye to her daughter Emma, ​​her son Dave Gardner and her partner Cassie Abbott via video link.

She came back from the edge and beat the virus.

“I feel very strange,” the mother of two told the Redditch Advertiser from the hospital.

“I almost died. I lost my father and I almost lost my mother. I thought I was going to die.

“I have never felt this way before in my life. This is one of the worst viruses someone could pass. “

But Emma, ​​the mother of a three-year-old son, insists that inspiration can be drawn from the story.

“The past five weeks have been like a blur, a blur we’ve been through,” says the 28-year-old beauty therapist. “It was like” How much more can a family spend? “

“But this is letting people know that you CAN get out of this. I know that there are many people who do not come out of this, and that is why we have to say our message.

“We are lucky and unlucky, I suppose. I have lost my grandfather and my nan will never be 100 percent better. But we are so grateful that we still have three people with us. “

The 28-year-old added: “My poor babysitter has had to cry alone.

“He was in the hospital for five weeks. I don’t think it will recover 100%, but it surprises us more and more every day.

“The grandfather got sick before the confinement. How he did it, we don’t know.

“They moved house; they lived in a nice big house and moved to a place controlled by the warden.

“They had an incredible life. They lived a life of cruises and went to Warner’s vacation spots. They had an incredible life. “

Emma admitted that she believed the family death toll would be higher as she watched her mother slowly sneak away.

“We saw how quickly it happened to my grandfather and we thought it would be like that,” he said.

“The last time I spoke to my mother, she was struggling to breathe and she looked horrible.

“At first, she was waiting for us from the hospital. That changed to being on oxygen.

“She got really bad. She hardly spoke to us; she was fading.

“She was trying hard but this virus was taking her. When my mother was in intensive care, she said things we needed to know.

“The doctors said they did not know if she would survive. She was really concerned. This was real, this was happening.

“I think the video they posted was to show the positive aspects of it. They are very proud of how far my mother has come.

“Seeing my mother applaud, she is very grateful to everyone. I can’t thank the hospital staff enough, they have been amazing. They were just there for her.”
