PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health has reported 834 cases of Covid-19 and two deaths in the last 24 hours.
Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 900 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharged to 23,120.
At a press conference, Noor Hisham said the 834 cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 33,339.
Meanwhile, the two deaths bring the balance to 251.
There are currently less than 10,000 active cases, with 9,968 patients in treatment. Of the total, 91 are in intensive care and 32 require respiratory assistance.
The two dead were an 88-year-old Malay man and a 75-year-old Malay woman. Both were from Sabah and had a history of chronic illness.
Of the 834 new cases, 831 were local transmissions. The remaining three were imported boxes, originating from the United States, Indonesia and India.
Sabah accounted for the majority of infections again with 503 cases, while Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya reported a total of 157 cases. Twenty-one cases were detected in Penang.
Noor Hisham said Labuan had seen a six-fold increase in cases, from 18 cases yesterday to 105 new infections today.
“The increase in positive Covid-19 cases in Labuan is due to more specific screening tests on the ground. Community tests in Jalan Tenaga, Labuan, detected 57 more positive cases today, ”he said.
He added that 64 of the current cases, or 7.7% of the accumulated cases, came from detention centers or prison groups.
Of the 503 cases in Sabah, 49 were detected in active groups, including the recently identified Tawau group of temporary detention centers, 292 were close contacts, while 127 infections were detected in other assessments.
In Selangor, 49 cases were from active groups, 52 were close contacts and 28 were from other Covid-19 detection tests.
For Labuan, 91 cases of active groups were detected, including the recently identified Tenaga group. Nine cases were close contacts and another five were from other evaluations.
Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, Johor, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan and Pahang detected fewer than 20 cases each.
