Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government does not want to shut down the economic sector as low-income workers and daily wage earners will be severely affected.

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Security Council (MKN) will make recommendations to Putrajaya to address the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the Klang Valley, Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

At a press conference, Ismail said Putrajaya had received several suggestions, including closing more economic sectors after acknowledging that many areas in Selangor had gone from yellow to red zones.

“But we don’t want to close the economic sectors. If we shut down the economic sector, people will be affected, especially those who are low-income and daily wage earners.

“These are the people we must take care of but, at the same time, we must take care of the health aspect. This balancing act is not easy.

“Some agree and others disagree with tightening the restrictions. These two very different views must be considered by the government. They have made me understand that the MKN will present its proposals tomorrow, ”he said.

Ismail said there is still room to impose restrictions on the economic sector without shutting it down completely, with a suggestion that involves adjusting the operating hours of companies.

However, he said Putrajaya will hear MKN’s proposals first, adding that the Ministry of International Trade and Industry will also provide its comments.

Ismail also said that Dewan Rakyat’s session will be held as usual, although tighter restrictions will be imposed, including shorter hours and limiting the number of officers per MP to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

He said virtual sessions were not possible since the Federal Constitution and the Rules of Parliament require that parliamentarians be physically present to vote on bills and also the next annual budget.

“The budget presentation will proceed in this session. We cannot avoid it because the budget is very important and must be approved. Otherwise, no expenses can be made. The budget is for the people and it must be approved ”.
