KUALA LUMPUR: The government will study a proposal to formulate a specific law that involves the election process to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions), Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, said that it cannot be denied that elections such as the Sabah state in September, which involved large gatherings, have led to an increase in cases of Covid-19 in the country.
“The elections are under the jurisdiction of the Electoral Commission (EC) and I cannot provide more information on whether or not partial or general elections can be held, but the government is always monitoring.
“If necessary, create a specific act, the government is studying and making proposals to the people,” he said during question time at Dewan Rakyat today.
He was answering a supplementary question from Datuk Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) on whether the government would draft a law to shorten the campaign period or a new campaign method to contain the spread of Covid-19.
In this regard, Mohd Redzuan said that the national crisis management mechanism in place now has managed to control the Covid-19 infection and has prevented health facilities such as hospitals and clinics from being overwhelmed by the large number of cases.
He said the mechanism included the implementation of the Motion Control Order (MCO), the Conditional Motion Control Order (CMCO), the Enhanced Motion Control Order (EMCO), and the Recovery Motion Control Order (RMCO). ) with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) focused on Health Protocol Practices and New Normal.
