Jordan Pickford has had to settle for a bench spot for Everton’s game against Newcastle in the Premier League.

England goalkeeper Pickford found himself alone among the substitutes when Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti pulled him out of the firing line at Newcastle.

The 26-year-old former Sunderland player was replaced in the starting lineup at St James’ Park by rookie Robin Olsen after a difficult few weeks in his career.

Ancelotti said on Everton’s official Twitter account: “I just want to give @ JPickford1 a break for this game and give Olsen a chance to have minutes. Jordan will be back for the next game against Manchester United ”.

Pickford was lucky not to be expelled for the challenge that left Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk in need of knee surgery in the 2-2 derby draw at Goodison Park on 17 October, although he later received backing from his coach for the incident.

He saved himself more death embarrassment in that game after he failed to avoid what would have been a late winner for Jordan Henderson when a VAR check resulted in a controversial offside decision.

Pickford had started all but one of his club’s games this season and four more for England.

However, while he has kept two clean sheets for his country, he has only achieved one, in Tottenham on 13 September, for the Toffees, whose undefeated start came to an end with a 2-0 loss at Southampton at the end of last week.
