MIRI: Miri Hospital has established a ward focused on treating Covid-19 cases following an increase in the number of new positive cases and new suspected cases in recent days.

The hospital, which serves as a regional medical center for northern Sarawak, said in an announcement that it has converted a common room into a Covid-19 treatment room specifically to deal with the pandemic.

The hospital also confirmed that one of its hospital health workers has been confirmed positive for Covid-19.

As of Saturday (October 31), there were 14 Covid-19 positive patients and nine suspected cases treated at the hospital.

The hospital’s management also announced stricter security measures.

“In view of the Covid-19 spike, all non-emergency surgeries have been postponed until further notice.

“Only urgent surgeries will be performed in emergencies. The elderly, children and pregnant women and people in poor health will not be allowed to enter the hospital unless it is for emergency purposes, ”said management.

They added that contact tracing and testing of all close contacts of the hospital worker that tested positive for Covid-19 are being carried out in conjunction with disinfection of the facility.

The hospital also warned members of the public not to visit the hospital if they do not have urgent business there.

For those seeking outpatient treatment, they can only come in after making an appointment.

Miri Hospital serves as the North Sarawak regional medical center for a population of approximately one million people living in eight districts including Miri, Baram, Limbang, Lawas and Bario.
