Covid-19: Malaysia on the way to recovery, infectivity rate decreases, says Director General of Health

PUTRAJAYA: Despite triple-digit daily Covid-19 infection figures in the country, Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah says Malaysia is on the way to recovery.

This was because the projected figures were much lower than expected, as the Health Ministry forecast a four-digit increase of 1,357 cases on Thursday (October 29), based on the infectivity rate of 1.5, or known as R null (R0). Said Dr. Noor Hisham.

If the R0 level was at 1.0, Dr. Noor Hisham said Malaysia would have received 950 cases on October 30 and 955 cases on October 31.

“But, there were only 659 cases on October 31st. This means that our R0 level is less than 1.0, ”Dr. Noor Hisham said during a press conference at the Ministry of Health in Putrajaya on Saturday.

“This meant that the conditional motion control (MCO) order that allows only the economic sector to function has a positive effect on lowering our level from R0 to 1,” he added.

For an R0 level of 1, it means that each Covid-19 patient will infect another person.

Dr Noor Hisham also attributed the reduction in the R0 level to the efforts of the Ministry of Health, adding that they now aim to reduce the infectivity level to 0.3.

Dr. Noor Hisham also urged Malaysians to play their part in ensuring that SOPs are met to curb Covid-19.
