PETALING JAYA: A nighttime fire at a plastic processing factory located upstream from Sungai Kuang has been determined to be the cause of odor pollution in the river.
A statement issued by the chairman of Selangor’s committee for environment, green technology, science, technology and innovation and consumer affairs, Hee Loy Sian, said that the fire was detected by the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) during a 24-hour operation to control river pollution.
“LUAS detected a fire incident near Sg Kuang while conducting Ops Water Source around 10 pm yesterday (October 30).
“According to the information, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said that the fire broke out in the factory at 6 pm,” Hee said.
As the distance from the factory is only 33 km to the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant, immediate actions were implemented to address the contamination that has been measured in three TON (Odor Threshold Number) in Sungai Kuang by LUAS, Air Selangor and Selayang Township. Council said.
The operation of the treatment plant was not stopped and the water supply was not interrupted, he added.
Odor sampling tests conducted by LUAS and Air Selangor traced odor contamination back to soot discharging into river waterways.
The black residue that spoils the water’s surface is said to come from combustible materials from the factory fire.
