PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that declaring a state emergency is the only way to halt elections in the country, following the announcement of the Batu Sapi by-elections on December 5 and the possibility of a Sarawak state election in A near future.
During a special speech to update the Covid-19 situation in the country, he said that he feared the elections in Sarawak could cause a new outbreak of Covid-19 cases there.
However, he said there was nothing to stop the elections. He said the Federal Constitution says elections must be held within 60 days of any announcement of a vacant position.
His speech comes a week after Yang di-Pertuan Agong rejected his attempt to declare a partial state of emergency.
