Melaka closes Pulau Besar due to Covid-19 fears

MELAKA: Pulau Besar has been temporarily closed for any activity and public visit since yesterday until further notice to curb the spread of Covid-19, Melaka Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali said today.

He said the move, which was in line with the decision made at the state security meeting not to allow large-scale gatherings of more than 50 people at a time, was taken following the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in the country. and also as a measure to prevent the appearance of new clusters.

“Previously, we carried out comprehensive cleaning in Pulau Besar, and with the celebration of Maulidur Rasul (and a holiday), we don’t want to have a new cluster with visitors coming from red areas.

“All activities there have been postponed and other islands in the state, such as Pulau Upeh, cannot host events involving large gatherings either,” he told reporters after the launch of Ziarah Prihatin in conjunction with the celebration of Maulidur Rasul 1442H. here.

In another development, Sulaiman said the state government would focus on efforts to help people tackle various Covid-19-related issues in the 2021 state budget submission.

“Of course, the people want the best and the current state government will make sure that attention is paid to the needs and well-being of the people,” he said.
