King Congratulates ‘Cikgu Sam’, Conveys Best Wishes

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The success of the selection of English teacher Samuel Isaiah as one of the 10 finalists for the 2020 Global Teacher Award has caught the attention of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

His Majesty expressed his congratulations, joy and pride at the dedication and noble effort of the young Kuantan teacher Pahang in being selected as a finalist, thus making the country famous on the international stage.

The Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, said that Al-Sultan Abdullah also expressed his hope that Samuel’s great achievements and commitment will be a source of inspiration and example for all Malaysians, especially teachers to give what Better themselves and strive for success in their respective fields at home or on the world stage.

“His Majesty also wished him good luck and prayed that he would win the award and be blessed with continued success in the field of education,” he said in a statement from Istana Negara on Thursday (October 29).

According to a statement from the organizers of the London-based Varkey Foundation, Samuel affectionately called “Cikgu Sam “was selected from 12,000 nominations from more than 140 countries.

The award, which offers 1 million dollars (4.16 million ringgit), is a program that recognizes teachers for their efforts in education, organized in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Scientific Organization. Culture (Unesco).

Samuel, 33, who spent eight years at SK Runchang, Muadzam Shah, Pahang, had introduced several innovations to inspire his Orang Asli students to dream big and crucially connect them to the outside world.

Among the programs Samuel presented was an email exchange project known as “Asli E-Pal”, in which students could communicate in English with adult volunteers from all over Malaysia and abroad.

She also hosted the “Speak Up With Poetry” program, in which she worked with amateur poets to write poems related to the Orang Asli culture, which her students would then watch in the form of guided videos to learn English.

The school’s average pass rate in English had increased from 30% in 2012 to between 80% and 85% in 2015-2018, the Varkey Foundation said.

Samuel also received the 2019 Superhero Teachers Award. – Bernama
