KUCHING (Oct 29): The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is not imposing an inter-district travel restriction for Kuching, although it was declared a Covid-19 red zone on Tuesday.

However, its president, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, has advised people outside of Kuching to only visit the district if they have an urgent reason to do so, and similarly, those in Kuching were urged not to leave the district.

“Similarly, for those in Kuching we hope they will refrain from going to other districts of the state. Stay home, stay safe, ”he told reporters after visiting the Kampung Haji Baki Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) control room.

The chief deputy minister said that SDMC had considered many factors before enforcing the EMCO and in a total shutdown that would ban any interdistrict travel.

“We have also spoken with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. Individuals and business communities will face many difficulties in a total shutdown. So we came to the conclusion of doing the EMCO in Kampung Haji Baki, ”he said.

“In other areas like the Green Hill area where positive cases suddenly skyrocketed to 20 yesterday and what we are concerned about, we do Active Case Detection (ACD). Those in the Green Hill group, people are also scattered around town.

“But fortunately, many of them have come forward for testing in hospitals and private clinics on their own,” he said.

Uggah had announced the Green Hill Cluster yesterday, the last of five groups active in the state. The new cluster has 25 cases as of yesterday.

Kuching is currently the only red zone in Sarawak. The Ministry of Health classifies areas with 40 cases or more in a two-week period as red areas, those with at least one case in the same period as the yellow areas and green areas are those that do not present cases.
