SHAH ALAM: Four incidents that could have caused water contamination in Selangor over the past week were immediately detected and addressed, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said today.

He said the latest incident took place yesterday, related to an oil spill in a river in Kampung Baru Balakong. But, he added, investigations by the relevant agencies found that it did not come from any factory or workshop in the area.

“Three days ago we detected the same type of contamination in Sungai Kundang, Rawang. I am concerned this was done on purpose, but I have no proof.

“I urge all parties, including those that were negligent, please … this could affect millions of residents due to the disruption of the water supply,” he told reporters here today.

Amirudin said the state government had recently increased the number of law enforcement officers and staff to monitor river basins in the state to prevent contamination from recurring and that they will be equipped with drones from Sunday.

Earlier, the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) in a statement said it received a complaint from the public around 6pm yesterday about a pollution incident in Kampung Baru Balakong, and the investigation found that it was caused by the oil. used motor that was dumped in the location.

He said contaminated water would have entered Sungai Balak and Sungai Langat, but LUAS had placed oil platforms and barriers in place to prevent oil from flowing into rivers.

He added that the investigation also found that the affected area was an area of standing water and the oil spill was suspected to have been carried out by a third party.
