PUTRAJAYA: The new maximum retail price for 3-layer face masks will be lowered to RM1 70 sen per piece, starting this Sunday, said Minister of Homeland Trade and Consumer Affairs Alexander Nanta Linggi.

In a statement today, he said that the maximum wholesale price of the masks would also be lowered to 65 sen from the previous 95 sen.

He said the government has taken into account the needs of the people who have to adopt the new rules, especially the mandatory use of masks.

“Therefore, the ministry has revised the price of the masks with the cooperation of local manufacturers and importers.

“This new maximum price will be applied through the 2011 Price Control and Anti-Profit Law (PCAP)”.

Linggi said that the maximum retail price for single-layer face masks has been set at seven sen per piece, while two-layer face masks will cost 20 sen per piece and N95 masks will be RM6 per piece.

Meanwhile, he said the ministry had conducted a total of 67,217 inspections and monitoring of the price and supply of face masks across the country from January 29 to October 25.

“Our enforcement action led to seizures worth RM 543,737 and comprised of a total of RM 518,400 issued to 73 companies,” he said, adding that traders could be fined for not complying with the PCAP.
