(Reuters) – Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have formed the Premier League’s most powerful partnership with José Mourinho this season, but the Portuguese manager says part of the credit must go to his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.
Son scored his eighth goal of the season in Monday’s 1-0 win at Burnley after Kane headed an Erik Lamela corner kick in his way. The Spurs are fifth, two points behind leader Everton, and lead the league in scoring with 16 goals.
It was the ninth goal the pair combined this season, with Kane assisting in seven of Son’s eight goals, while the Korean has assisted in two of the English forward’s five goals.
The duo have combined for 29 goals in their Premier League careers, second only to former Chelsea partner Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba (36), according to Opta statistics.
“It is an understanding that comes from the time of Mauricio,” Mourinho told reporters.
“I don’t want all the credit, let’s share with Mauricio. They play together for a long time, probably in a different way because Harry isn’t always a nine now.
“What I like most about both is that they are two great players but close friends, without jealousy, they both play for the team.”
Kane said the Spurs were showing signs of progress with Mourinho as they chase a first major trophy since their 2008 League Cup win.
“I think we are at a stage where we have been so close for so many years, many of us have been together for four or five years,” Kane said.
“We know that with the team we have and the players we have, we can do something special.”
