KUCHING: Kuching is now a Covid-19 red zone again after 16 new local broadcasts were reported in the district on Tuesday (October 27), says Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

The chief deputy minister said this meant that Kuching had recorded 49 locally transmitted cases in the past 14 days, changing its status from yellow to red.

He said the remaining 39 districts in the state were still green areas.

Sarawak classifies red zones as districts with more than 40 local broadcasts in the last 14 days, yellow zones with one to 40 cases, and green zones with none.

Uggah said 12 of the 16 new cases were from Baki’s group, which comprises three elementary school students, two high school students, five adults and two older people.

This brings the number of cases in the group to 25.

“Since the Baki group’s index case was reported on October 18, the Health Department has carried out contact tracing and active case detection on Kg Haji Baki.

“A total of 949 people have been tested, with 25 positive tests, 823 negative and 101 more awaiting results,” Uggah said at the state disaster management committee briefing here on Tuesday (October 27).

He said that an enhanced motion control (MCO) order at Kg Haji Baki would be enforced from Wednesday (October 28) to November 10 as a preventive measure to break the chain of transmission in the group.

During the enhanced MCO period, residents in the affected areas are unable to leave their homes.

Houses of worship and schools will be closed and the economic sectors will not be allowed to function.

“The Kuching Divisional Disaster Management Committee will coordinate food distribution during the enhanced MCO,” Uggah said.

In addition, he said that all entertainment and reflexology centers will be closed starting Wednesday until further notice, as they are considered high-risk facilities.
