Ryan Giggs has backed former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney to be as successful a manager as he has been as a player.
Rooney joined Derby County on an 18-month player-coach deal for the DC United MLS team in January and was working closely with the club’s first-team coaching staff prior to the coronavirus outbreak.
The 34-year-old has also stepped up his quest for coach qualifications since joining the Championship side, but Giggs has revealed that England’s record-scoring coach ambitions started while he was still at Old Trafford, and stated that he showed the effort required from the beginning.

Rooney joined Derby on a player-coach deal, but Giggs said he was interested in United.
“I know Wayne was interested,” Giggs told The Athletic.
‘When he was at United, towards the end, he was starting his badges. We would see him doing his practical sessions. I spent a lot of time (with Louis van Gaal) in the analyst office, where we used to analyze the opposition.
Wayne would go in a lot. I wanted to study, I wanted to work. And he’s a soccer man. As for soccer, he knows what he is talking about.
The former Man United winger said he has seen that good players are not always good coaches.

Giggs also believes Rooney will use the experience of playing with Sir Alex Ferguson.
But Giggs argues that playing with some of the world’s most distinguished coaches at Sir Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho will only help Rooney forge his own path in his coaching career.
“Some people say, as I found out, that being a good player is not always (a good coach),” Giggs continued.
“But if you love the game and are ready to work, our advantage is having played at the highest level.” He has worked with Sir Alex. Then its international managers.
‘He was there when José was there, and now another Dutch coach (Derby coach Phillip Cocu). Then he will have had different ways of working, which can also help. ‘
