A former BN MP says Muhyiddin Yassin’s legitimacy had been questioned after he refused to submit to a vote of no confidence in March.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his cabinet must resign as they have lost the confidence of the people, said former Barisan Nasional MP Dominic Puthucheary.

“The King’s decision yesterday means that the Cabinet has also failed to fulfill its oath to preserve, protect and defend the Federal Constitution,” said Puthucheary, who is also a constitutional lawyer.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, after consulting with other Malaysian rulers, said that it was not necessary to declare a state of emergency as the government was doing well in managing the Covid-19 crisis.

He also urged parliamentarians to protect themselves against “irresponsible actions that can affect the stability of the government” and emphasized the importance of the 2021 Budget, which will be presented on November 6.

Earlier in the week it had been speculated that MPs might vote against the budget, which would automatically lead to the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet.

During the weekend, politicians, civil society, individuals, academics and the legal fraternity had expressed their disagreement on the government’s proposal that the King proclaim an emergency to combat the pandemic.

Puthucheaery, who was a deputy for Nibong Tebal for a period since 1995, said this was the first time in the nation’s history that the king had rejected the prime minister’s request to put all or part of the country in a state of emergency. since independence.

He said Muhyiddin and his cabinet had lost the trust of the people because they had tried to bypass the Federal Constitution, the supreme law of the land to run the nation.

Furthermore, he said, Muhyiddin’s legitimacy had been questioned because he refused to submit to a “no confidence” motion in March.

“The coalition that he now leads did not obtain the mandate of the people in the general elections of May 2018,” he added.
