MCMC says the freezing of new messaging services licenses will allow the sector to strengthen itself to face future challenges.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has imposed a two-year moratorium on the issuance of new messaging service licenses, effective September 14.

In a statement today, MCMC said the decision was made with the consent of the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Saifuddin Abdullah, through the licensing authority of the Postal Services Act 2012. The decision can be reviewed at any time. moment if necessary.

As such, it said that it will not accept any new license applications for all categories of messaging services during the period.

“The moratorium is implemented to make way for the government, together with the postal and courier industry, to formulate new plans to strengthen the sector that faces various challenges due to technological changes and market trends.

“The move is also in line with the call made by the Association of Malaysian Express Carriers (AMEC), which represents the country’s top 25 courier companies, including Pos Malaysia Berhad, GD Express Sdn Bhd, City-Link Express ( M) Sdn Bhd, in August, ”the statement said.

However, MCMC said that new license applications and renewals received before the moratorium date went into effect would be processed as usual for approval.

There were 109 courier service licensees in various categories operating in Malaysia.

The statement also said that the process of drafting a new action plan will be implemented through the National Laboratory of the Postal and Messaging Industry (NPCIL), which will take place from November 2 to 22, subject to the implementation of the conditional motion control order.

“The full report containing the proposed action plan to support the strategic development of the new postal and courier industry will be uploaded to the MCMC website.

“The outcome of NPCIL is important as the industry serves as the core of e-commerce activities and the development of the digital economy, which now faces several new challenges,” he said.

The last study on the postal and courier industry was conducted in 2009.
