PETALING JAYA: Umno Vice President Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the actual decision to reject Perikatan Nasional’s proposal for a state of emergency should be a lesson for all parties to be mature.
Khaled said the decision by Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and their fellow rulers was wise and “indirectly served as a seal of approval that the Federal Constitution should not be abused.”
He said the King had shown confidence in the ability of leaders who have worked tirelessly to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
Khaled said the matter had been handled in such a way that Malaysians trusted that the rulers always listen to the people, celebrate democracy and uphold the Federal Constitution.
The king’s decision, announced by Istana Negara tonight, sparked an outbreak on social media for the hashtag #DaulatTuanku (long live the king), with praise for Sultan Abdullah.
Among those who responded to the hashtag were Umno’s secretary general, Ahmad Maslan, and the party’s youth chief, Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. They both attached Istana Negara’s statement to their tweets.
Former human resources minister and deputy from Ipoh Barat, M Kula Segaran, thanked the King for “always being the King of the people and doing the best for the nation.” He added that it was time to put politics aside and work together to curb Covid-19.
MCA attorney Chan Quin Er tweeted that an emergency declaration should only be used “when the normal functioning of the state can no longer be maintained.”
“His Majesty’s royal decision characterized the common pride and love of Malaysians for our democracy,” he said.
Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said on Twitter that it was the first time in Malaysian history that a prime minister had been denied an important proposal.
Amanah President Mohamad Sabu said the party was grateful for the actual decision.
Istana Negara said in a statement tonight that the King, after discussing with his fellow rulers, felt that the government had managed to handle the Covid-19 pandemic well and that there was no need to declare a state of emergency for the country or (in ) anywhere in Malaysia.
“His Majesty wishes to remind politicians to stop politicking, which may disrupt the stability of the country’s administration,” the statement said.
