“Certain individuals” who overthrew Dr. Mahathir Mohamad are behind the proposal to declare a state of emergency, according to a PPBM source.

PETALING JAYA: Members of the PPBM high council were in the dark about the widely speculated proposal for a state of emergency, according to a high-ranking party leader. Instead, the idea came from “certain desperate individuals,” he said.

The PPBM source said: “The supreme council was not informed about this (movement to declare an emergency) and some of us are very concerned that this movement in the short term will be counterproductive for the party.”

The leadership council member, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the president of PPBM, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, had been misguided by these people.

“These individuals were the ones who had joined the PPBM and then overthrew the party’s chairman, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad,” he said.

Mahathir was party chairman and prime minister until March, when he resigned after PPBM joined forces with MPs from PAS and Umno to form the Perikatan Nasional government.

The PPBM source said he hoped Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malaysian rulers would not agree to any proposal to declare a state of emergency or suspend Parliament.

“It will be a disaster for the country and the economy. It will send the wrong signals to the international community and investors. This is not what we signed up for, ”he said.

He hoped that the members of the PPBM’s supreme council would have the courage to question the party leaders about the justification for an emergency or to prorogue Parliament.

He said Malaysia needed a complete reform of the political system towards a two-party system, eliminating parties based on race and party jumps.
