Paul Merson and Tim Sherwood have criticized Arsenal for exiling their ‘most talented player’ Mesut Ozil.

Ozil almost certainly played his last game for the Gunners after being left out of Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2020-21 season.

Mikel Arteta says he has “failed” with Ozil and insisted that his absence was solely due to “football reasons.”

But both Merson and Sherwood believe that Ozil should be on the Arsenal team and “can’t understand” the way they have treated him.

“I don’t see how it is for football reasons,” Gunners hero Merson told Sky Sports. “The boy is too talented, too good.”

“For him not to get a place on this Arsenal team, it has to be more than just football.

‘He can make things happen. He was in Arteta’s team before the confinement and everything went through him.

“He is a special player and it is a pity that we do not see him now.”

Former Tottenham boss Sherwood added: “Sounds like a club decision rather than Arteta’s.

I cannot understand why they are not playing with him. For me, he is the most talented player they have.

‘Yes, they have excellent firepower in [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alexandre] Lacazette but they lack creativity and he [Ozil] he is a top player.

“His work pace and body language can be frustrating, but when he plays well, he is a top-notch player who can play for any club in the Premier League.”

Ozil has vowed to keep fighting in an attempt to salvage his career at Arsenal, but his agent criticized Arteta this week and accused the Gunners boss of lying.

Dr. Erkut Sogut told ESPN: ‘Arsenal fans deserve an honest explanation, not [Arteta] saying “I failed Ozil”.

‘You didn’t fail Ozil – you failed to be fair, honest and transparent and to treat someone with respect who has a contract and was loyal all the time.

‘All the outsiders know they haven’t treated him fairly. It didn’t give him a chance to show himself this season. ‘
