PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has urged Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malaysian rulers not to accept any request from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to declare a state of emergency.
Such a request would be “an illegitimate request based on flimsy excuses,” he said today.
Tengku Razaleigh, the oldest member of the Dewan Rakyat, also described that Muhyiddin no longer had any legitimacy to be prime minister for having refused to submit to a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.
“I also have information that suggests that the prime minister does not have a simple majority of the Dewan Rakyat members. Otherwise, why are you afraid to submit to a vote of no confidence? he said.
Razaleigh is one of several MPs who have presented a no-confidence motion against Muhyiddin to the Speaker of the House.
He said that, in principle, it would be wrong for Muhyiddin to seek a declaration of a state of emergency, presumably to protect his own position.
“An illegitimate prime minister is not in a moral position to seek a statement that can give him powerful powers without any accountability and checks and balances,” Razaleigh said.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong is reported to be seeking consultation with his fellow rulers on the proposals put forward by the prime minister after a special cabinet meeting on Friday.
No details have emerged on the proposals. However, there has been widespread speculation that a state of emergency or partial emergency was among the issues brought to the King. Other matters are believed to have included the 2021 budget, which will be presented to Parliament on November 6.
