GEORGE TOWN: A total of 39 inmates at Penang Pretrial Prison tested positive for Covid-19 after undergoing a third screening.
The prison director, Mohamed Jusoh Ismail, said the results of the prisoners’ two previous tests were negative.
“However, they began to show symptoms and the Ministry of Health staff performed a third screening test and (they) confirmed (that they were) positive for Covid-19.
“They are being treated in the low-risk wing of the prison and are reported to be stable,” he said.
He added that more than 200 inmates are now in the green zone for showing signs of recovery.
Seberang Perai Prison Director Zulkifli Abdul Manah said health personnel were screening inmates who have been in prison for six months or more to make sure the virus does not spread among them.
Currently, there are two Covid-19 groups in Penang: the remand group and the Jawi prison group, all with inmates. Both prisons are now in a state of closure.
Until yesterday, the preventive prison group registered 446 positive cases while the Jawi group registered 95 cases.
