KOTA KINABALU: Almost RM5 million in goods went up in smoke after a fire destroyed a two-story furniture and appliance store along Jalan Lintas-Kepayan here earlier today.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The store manager, who only wished to be known as Chong, said he learned of the fire after receiving a call from one of his workers, adding that the store had not yet opened its doors at the time.

“When I arrived, a large part of the store was already destroyed,” he told reporters. He estimated losses at around RM5 million.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Senior Operations Commander Hamsa Isnurdini said they received a distress call at 6.23 am and the fire was brought under control an hour later.

He said they stopped the fire from spreading to a nearby tire store and home.
