Jurgen Klopp faces Diogo Jota’s dilemma as Liverpool consider a rethinking of Fabinho

Liverpool started their Champions League campaign in a winning fashion against Ajax on Wednesday.

An own goal was enough for the Reds to win 1-0 in their opening Group D game in Amsterdam.

The Premier League and the world champions are now turning their attention to the top flight, and Jurgen Klopp is considering a number of modifications.

And here we look forward to the changes the Reds boss could make for Sheffield United’s visit on Saturday.

Fabinho or not?

Liverpool are now in the midst of an intense streak of matches, but Klopp will be reluctant to play too much with his defense.

Much will depend on the availability of Joel Matip, who was absent against Ajax due to a muscle problem.

The return of the Cameroonian could allow Fabinho to rise to a more accustomed midfield role after an excellent performance as center back alongside Joe Gomez.

With Kostas Tsimikas and James Milner’s continued fitness doubts having played most of the match midweek, Andy Robertson is almost certain to continue as left back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite flank once again.

Henderson ready

The midfield only began to function properly Wednesday when Jordan Henderson was introduced by Curtis Jones at halftime.

He released Gini Wijnaldum to play with greater freedom of attack while Milner admirably stuck to his task.

The heavy field in Amsterdam means it will be a surprise to see the latter start on Saturday, with Henderson poised to return to the starting lineup.

Jones could retain his place, but the composition of the midfield is hotly debated with Klopp waiting for updates on injuries from Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita.

Firmino’s position

Klopp raised his eyebrows as he replaced Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino together on Wednesday night.

And while not everyone will be on the bench this weekend, there is the possibility of some turnover given the strength of the performances of Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota in particular.

Firmino seems more likely to give way after a few subpar starts, with Minamino being the obvious replacement. However, bringing in left back Jota could mean switching Mane down the middle.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who also came in against Ajax, is another option, although Divock Origi appears to be on the sidelines today.
