KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii has urged the Sarawak government to reconsider its decision to venture into hydrogen energy to avoid imposing a financial burden on the state in the long term.

He said Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg should disclose the economic feasibility study and profitability analysis of the proposed company, including the construction of multi-fuel service stations and hydrogen buses.

“Abang Johari must be transparent and avoid unnecessary and wasteful government spending on mega-projects that do not benefit the people,” he said.

Yii was commenting on the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation’s plan to build six multi-fuel refueling stations in the state.

The stations will operate under the Petros brand, the state-owned oil and gas company, which will offer conventional fuels, electric charging and hydrogen refueling.

Yii said the cost of hydrogen cars is probably beyond the reach of most Sarawakians.

“The government should consider investing in battery electric vehicles, since 70% of our energy comes from hydroelectric power, which is renewable energy,” he said.

He said an electric vehicle could be charged using the power grid anywhere and anytime, without investing in a costly hydrogen infrastructure and distribution network.
