SHAH ALAM: A company director, his son and six of his workers were arrested today by the police in connection with the most recent planned dumping of waste in Sungai Gong, Rawang, which caused a major water cut in the Klang Valley that affected to more than 1.2 million households Monday.

Selangor Police CID Chief SAC Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the 62-year-old director and his 31-year-old son were arrested in Rawang at 11:30 a.m.

He said the company’s workers were also arrested, including two Malaysians and four foreigners from Nepal, Pakistan and Myanmar.

Fadzil said initial investigations showed the effluent odor dates back to Sungai Gong and is suspected to have originated from a company that repairs and sells construction machinery.

He said that a remand order against the eight men will be requested tomorrow at the Selayang Court.

Fadzil said that the case is being investigated for “damages for damage to irrigation works” under Section 430 of the Penal Code.

On Monday, around 12:40 a.m. M., The water supplier Air Selangor had detected three tons of effluent in its water source in Sungai Selangor.

As a result, its water treatment plants were forced to stop operations to clean up contaminants.

Since the water cut on Monday, supplies have been resumed in phases in most of the affected areas.

At the beginning of last month, a similar water supply interruption for more than a million homes caused by the planned dumping of waste led to the arrest of four brothers.

All were directors of a family business, Yip Chee Seng & Sons Sdn Bhd in Batu Arang, Rawang, a company that also deals with the sale and repair of construction machinery.

The directors between the ages of 50 and 60 were arrested on September 4 and held in pre-trial detention for 10 days before being jointly charged in court for allegedly dumping effluent in Sungai Gong.

The Selayang court denied them bail, but they were released days later after an appeal by their lawyers.
