KUALA LUMPUR: Wanting to look her best for her wedding, a 23-year-old woman died yesterday after undergoing a failed liposuction at a beauty center in Cheras.

The victim is said to have come to the center, which is located in a shopping center and is operated by a woman and her daughter, at around 2.30pm for treatment.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Commissioner Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said today that shortly after the victim received an injection from the beautician, she suffered from shortness of breath and turned pale.

He said the beautician called an ambulance and the victim was rushed to a hospital, but doctors pronounced her dead.

Saiful said the 49-year-old beautician and her 23-year-old daughter were arrested after the incident and are being held under a pre-trial order.

He said initial investigations revealed that although the beauty center was a legally registered business, it was not endorsed by the relevant authorities to perform liposuction procedures.

Saiful said staff allegedly went ahead with treatment after being persuaded by the victim.

He said the case is being investigated for causing wrongful death under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code.

Researchers are awaiting a post-mortem and toxicology report to determine what caused the woman’s death.
