LANGKAWI (Bernama): Approximately 80 house sparrows have been found dead, believed to have been poisoned, in a residential area in Taman Wawasan Indah, Ulu Melaka near here over the past two days.
One resident, Shahrizan Saad, 39, said the dead sparrows were found on trees, house roofs and fences, with yellow liquid oozing from their beaks.
He said he started finding the carcasses of the birds around the residential area, which is near a padi field, at 6 p.m. on Sunday (October 18).
Most of the birds are believed to have died after eating padi seeds mixed with Furadan pesticides, he told reporters when they gathered here on Tuesday (October 20).
He believed that many more carcasses would be discovered because the birds would naturally go to the padi field to eat.
Langkawi District National Park and Wildlife (Perhilitan) officers were on the scene to monitor the situation and take some samples for investigation.
However, according to Perhilitan warrant officer Mohd Nazri Amran, the house sparrow is not listed as a protected species in the 2010 Wildlife Conservation Act, and as such no action can be taken against suspected perpetrators except to warn them. – Bernama
