Driving with an almost empty fuel tank is bad: Honda Malaysia explains why ‘E’ does not mean Enough!

You may ‘know your car’, or so the meme goes, but did you know that running your vehicle on very little fuel is actually bad for your health? Honda Malaysia has posted a short video detailing why that is the case.

First of all, running close to the ‘E’ end of the gauge is bad for your car’s fuel pump because it won’t get the lubrication it requires. As with most mechanical parts in constant motion, prolonged operation in this state will lead to premature wear and possible failure, and the same applies to the fuel pump.

Another reason to keep your fuel tank full enough is that it will prevent the fuel pump and engine from picking up contaminants that have settled to the bottom of the tank over time. Running out of fuel frequently leads to a greater likelihood that settled sludge will collect in the rest of the fuel system, subsequently damaging the engine.

Running a vehicle on low fuel could also cause your system to pump air, and prolonged exposure to air will also cause problems with the fuel pump and other components that require fuel to run. If you are really pushing the limits of your fuel range, your vehicle may run out of fuel at a really inconvenient time, such as on a highway or crossing busy intersections, which could be dangerous.

Last but not least, don’t you think it would be a much less stressful experience if your vehicle had enough fuel at all times? You will have a clearer head to avoid and overcome any eventuality that may be encountered on the road, which will make the time in your vehicle safer. You’ll need fuel sooner or later, so you can also rest assured that you have enough in your tank. Stay fed and safe.
