PETALING JAYA: Dexamethasone, used for pneumonia patients, is more effective in treating Covid-19 than remdesivir and the HIV / AIDS drugs lopinavir or ritonavir, says Chief Health Officer Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“Dexamethasone, which is used to treat pneumonia, is more effective. That’s all from the report for now, ”he said, referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) findings from the“ Solidarity Trial ”that also involved 190 Malaysians.

According to Dr. Noor Hisham, the findings from the “Solidarity Trial” found that remdisivir does not decrease the number of deaths, hospital admissions or the progression of Covid-19 in a patient.

“We were also informed that the results of the ‘Solidarity Trial’ found that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in treating Covid-19, neither is lopinavir nor ritonavir.”

Last week, the WHO reported that data from its “Solidarity Trial” on regimens of remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir / ritonavir, and interferon had little effect on Covid-19.

The WHO report also said that dexamethasone is the only effective drug used to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19.
