KUALA LUMPUR: A 30-year-old police officer has claimed trial in Sessions Court here for gang robbery at an apartment in Cheras last week.

Mohamad Hazani Omar, who was attached to the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Judge Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid on Monday (October 19).

The police officer was charged with another man and two other men who were still at large for committing a gang robbery in Syaifulyazan Hassan, 57, and left with two gold bracelets and RM275 in cash belonging to the victim.

He allegedly committed the crime in a unit in Flat Sri Melaka, Cheras, here at 1 am on October 13.

The crime contemplated in article 395 of the Penal Code carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and flogging, if convicted.

Deputy District Attorney Noor Dayana Mohamad did not offer bail.

However, the defendant, who was not represented, requested a lower bond claiming that he had to support his parents and two school-age children.

The court granted a 6,000 ringgit bond of a guarantee and imposed the conditions that the defendant could not approach the victim, as well as a daily curfew from 11 pm to 6 am while the case was resolved.

In the same court, the other man charged is Hazani’s friend, Muhammad Faizal Azmin Mohd Azman, who has pleaded not guilty to the armed robbery and two other police-related crimes.

The 21-year-old graphic designer was charged with gang robbing the same victim at the same time and place.

For the second count, he was charged with impersonating a public official posing as a senior police officer.

The offense under Section 170 of the Penal Code carries a maximum of two years in jail or a fine or both, at the time of conviction.

For the third count, he was charged with possessing police paraphernalia consisting of a police vest, a police operation shirt with the integrity badge and inspector rank, handcuffs and a police cap.
