PETALING JAYA: England’s Marcus Ellis-Chris Langridge achieved the biggest victory of his career by winning the Danish Open title.
World No. 22 Ellis-Langridge beat Russian Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov 20-22,21-17,21-18 in yesterday’s 73-minute thriller to become the first English couple to win the competition in male doubles in 45 years.
The last English couple to accomplish the feat was David Eddy-Eddy Sutton in 1975.
The victory was very sweet for Ellis-Langridge as they were finally able to end their four-game losing streak against Ivanov-Sozonov, the 2016 All-England title winners.
Ellis-Langridge, a bronze medalist from the Rio Olympics, was last defeated by the world’s No. 24 Russians in the All-England quarter-finals in March.
The triumph of the Denmark Open marked the English duo’s biggest victory to date on the World Tour.
Ellis-Langridge had won three titles previously, all in 2018, but they were at the fifth-tier Scottish Open, the SaarLorLux Open and the Canadian Open.
Yesterday’s victory earned Ellis-Langridge a whopping $ 55,500 in prize money, which is a considerable sum considering there were no tournaments for nearly seven months due to the Tour’s suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It also put them back on track to qualify for the World Tour Finals in Bangkok in January, as the victory is expected to catapult them from 24th to fourth in the points standings.
