Referee confirms Pickford should have been sent off for terror tackle on van Dijk

Jordan Pickford has been under a lot of pressure since the Merseyside Derby, hitting Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk at Goodison Park and getting his way.

The Dutchman was retired with less than ten minutes left, with Joe Gomez entering to replace his seemingly injured teammate.

The true extent of Virgil’s physical condition has yet to be discovered, but an update is expected sometime over the weekend regarding the defender.

Just before Pickford’s horror challenge, match officials called for offside, and the VAR reaffirmed the decision, but the goalkeeper was unpunished.

Speaking to the BT Sport commentary team, the internal referee said that the Everton number 1 should have received a red card and that the offside penalty is irrelevant.

Take a look at Jim Boardman’s tweet below:

You can watch a video of the incident. hereand come to your own conclusions, but we think it’s a shame and we can’t believe Pickford was allowed to stay on the field in any way.
