Johor school closed after student tested positive for Covid-19

JOHOR BARU: SK Taman Desa Skudai here has been closed for eight days starting Friday (Oct 16) after one of his students tested positive for Covid-19.

Checks at the school found that the Johor Department of Education issued a notice stating that the school will be closed from October 16-23.

The notice posted on the school’s front door added that students may return to their school on October 25.

The order is known to have been issued around 9.45am on Friday to allow authorities to conduct sanitation and screening tests on students after a third-year student tested positive for Covid-19.

Students who had been screened wearing pink armbands were seen and told to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Some 70 people are also known to have been in close contact with the infected student, including his schoolmates and students from nearby Sekolah Agama Tafrijiyyah Taman Universiti.

The Chairman of the Johor Education, Information, Heritage and Culture Committee, Mazlan Bujang, and the director of the state Department of Education, Shaharuddin Saari, declined to confirm the matter.

On Thursday (October 15), a viral WhatsApp message said that a student had tested positive for Covid-19 after family members from Selangor visited him on October 5.

The Health Ministry informed the student’s family after one of his relatives also tested positive for Covid-19.

They had been ordered to self-quarantine at their own home in Skudai from October 8 to 19 before the student was confirmed to have tested positive on Thursday (October 15) afternoon.
